Sunday Salmon, a nonprofit community restaurant, has introduced Wednesday Wheels, a new initiative providing no-cost meal deliveries across Douglas County, Colorado. The program aims to assist residents facing food insecurity, transportation challenges, medical conditions, or financial hardship.
Initially launched as a soft rollout on May 27, 2026, Wednesday Wheels is delivering individually packaged organic, gluten-free, and seed-oil-free meals to specific age 55+ senior apartment complexes, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and long-stay hotel residents in Castle Rock.
A full public launch is scheduled for early July, allowing any Castle Rock resident experiencing food insecurity to place online orders for pickup or receive direct delivery if unable to travel. The program plans to expand service to all of Douglas County as funding and volunteer support grow.
Meals are prepared with dignity and care, mirroring Sunday Salmon's standards, and are distributed without any eligibility requirements. The program's initial phase expects to deliver approximately 175 meals weekly, with a goal to exceed 200 weekly following the full launch.
Despite Douglas County's reputation for affluence, thousands of residents experience food insecurity, a challenge often hidden from public view. Data indicates nearly 20,000 people county-wide, including 4,000 in Castle Rock, lack consistent access to nutritious meals. Seniors, who make up a significant portion of the population and often live on fixed incomes, are particularly vulnerable amidst rising living costs.
Community-led initiatives like Wednesday Wheels address this need by bridging the gap between available resources and those who struggle to access them, highlighting a broader societal trend of local organizations stepping in to provide essential services where systemic gaps exist.
