Charles H. Pettaway Jr., a concert pianist and professor at Lincoln University, is increasing his national presence through his work in Africana music scholarship and performance. He has recently been featured across several media platforms, including Close Up Radio and Canadian Music Today, for his contributions as an educator and thought leader.
A central part of Pettaway's current academic work is a forthcoming book chapter titled 'The Myth of Absence: Black Presence in a Whitewashed World.' This research questions long-held beliefs about the perceived lack of Black contributions in global history, proposing a framework that places Africa, particularly ancient Kemet, as fundamental to the development of civilization.
In addition to his scholarship, Pettaway is developing a proposed Bachelor of Science in Africana Studies Music at Lincoln University. This program aims to establish Africana music as a rigorous academic field, exploring its intersection with history, sociology, and cultural identity through diverse musical genres.
His commitment to promoting Black classical artistry is also evident in his concert schedule, which includes performances of works by composers like Le Chevalier de Saint-Georges and George Walker. Pettaway also contributes to the development of new talent by judging the Debose National Piano Competition.
There is a growing academic and cultural movement to re-examine traditional historical narratives and elevate previously underrepresented contributions, particularly from African and diasporic cultures. This trend includes a push to formally integrate diverse musical traditions into higher education, recognizing their complex historical, sociological, and artistic significance. Institutions are increasingly developing specialized programs that reflect a global and inclusive understanding of knowledge.
This work aligns with broader efforts to decolonize curricula and provide a more accurate, comprehensive view of human civilization's development, ensuring that the foundational roles of various cultures are properly acknowledged and studied.
