A new review published in the World Journal of Pediatric Surgery highlights the gut microbiome as a major factor in the progression of biliary atresia (BA). Researchers identified a consistent pattern of dysbiosis, where infants with the condition show a significant decline in beneficial bacteria, such as Bifidobacterium, alongside an overgrowth of harmful microbes.
These microbial imbalances are present before corrective surgery and often worsen afterward. This shift is linked to poor bile flow clearance, increased liver scarring, and a higher risk of post-surgical complications like cholangitis.
The study suggests that current clinical practices, including the routine use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, may inadvertently exacerbate these microbial disruptions. Scientists are now investigating whether restoring a healthy gut environment through prebiotics or probiotics could improve long-term liver health in infants.
The medical community is increasingly shifting its focus toward the gut-liver axis, recognizing that the digestive tract's microbial health directly impacts systemic conditions.
